The original Peter Cottontail Easter special was produced by the same team that did the other well known and loved claymation holiday specials in the 60′s and 70′s. Shows like Frosty the Snowman, Year Without a Santa Claus, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Peter Cottontail is the story of how Peter had to overcome many obstacles to become the Chief Easter Bunny, including vanquishing his nemesis Irontail in a Easter egg delivery contest. The story is set in the super-cute “April Valley” where all the Easter bunnies live and work. Here is where they color eggs, make Easter bonnets, and have a whole team of bunnies dedicated to carving chocolate, the two most famous are “Leonardo de Bittersweet” and “Milk Chocolate-Angelo”.

Seymour Sassafras is the narrator and host of the show.		This is "Milk Chocolate Angelo" the famous chocolate carving Easter Bunny of April Valley

Confusingly, the Peter Cottontail story – AKA, Peter Rabbit – is not the same Peter Rabbit as in the 1902 Beatrix Potter book ”The Tale of Peter Rabbit”. This Peter Rabbit is from Thornton Burgess’ ”Old Mother West Wind” book series. Peter Rabbit changes his name to Peter Cottontail because it made him sound more important. *Snicker* But even more confusingly, this stop-motion television special from 1971 bears little to no resemblance to the story on which it is based. I guess there’s a lot of room in this world for bunnies named Peter!

So it’s a good thing I started drawing these Paul Frank coloring pages before I took my time off, because now I actually have something new to post. My 10 year old daughter suggested I make these, because she loves everything Paul Frank. Julius the Monkey is the trademark character, the one you’ve probably seen all over Target merchandise over the last year or two. My daughter has a Paul Frank alarm clock, folders & school supplies, and slippers & PJs. And probably five other things I am forgetting! The characters are super-cute. I’m pretty fond of the Bunny Girl, myself.

If you haven’t seen this show yet, and you’ve got toddlers or preschoolers, you’re in for a treat. Doc is a precious little girl whose mom is a physician. Doc wants to be a doctor, too, and she spends her time treating her toys and stuffed animals for whatever happens to ail them. Along the way, Doc manages to provide the viewer with great information on how to keep themselves healthy

• You need to go outside to get sunshine just like the remote control car that is feeling lethargic after being inside for too long.
• Washing your hands keeps germs from spreading, just like it did when a mysterious blue substance was getting on all the stuffed animals.
• You need to get plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when it’s hot outside.

One of the cute aspects of the show is that no one else can see her toys come to life. They all have to go limp when parents come out to the playhouse in the back yard that serves as Doc’s clinic. I love her nurse assistant, Hallie the Hippo, who is so excited to write down every diagnosis in The Big Book of Boo-Boos.

Found on Disney Junior, not only is Doc a female intellectual, but the show also teaches kids how to maintain their own health. Plus, there’s a lot of singing, and kids love singing.

Could this show get any better? Actually, it does. Because Doc is also African-American! One of the awesome things about Doc McStuffins is the fact her ethnicity is not even remotely a factor in the show.  As I’ve mentioned before, I love Jane and the Dragon, but the fact is that the plot clearly shows that she’s doing things girls aren’t “supposed” to be able to do. In Doc McStuffins, her gender and skin color are just non-issues.

She just happens to be black. And a doctor. And compassionate. And completely awesome.

I can just hear my kids saying, “Paper printed tv listings? And you mean that there weren’t kids shows on ALL THE TIME? Wow, mom, was the car invented when you were little?!”

What’s worse, is that somehow my own kids don’t have the same appreciation for Charlie Brown that I always have. They think he and the Peanuts gang are old fashioned and boring. That makes me a little sad, but I’ll share a little secret with you – I watch them anyway. Shhh – don’t tell anyone!
