Disney Junior Movie Review: Jake and the Neverland Pirates: Peter Pan Returns

jake neverland pirates Disney Junior Movie Review: Jake and the Neverland Pirates: Peter Pan Returns

Jake and the Neverland Pirates - Peter Pan Returns

The character Peter Pan was first created by J.M. Barrie more than 100 years ago. Since his creation for the stage play Peter Pan has been the subject of books, movies, and television shows. Jake and the Neverland Pirates debuted in 2011 and has since released two DVDs. Most recently, “Peter Pan Returns” in April 2012.

In Jake and The Neverland Pirates, Jake and his pirates are always at odds with Captain Hook, who is a bit less fearsome in this Disney Jr. television version. In “Jake and the Neverland Pirates: Peter Pan Returns”, Jake and his pirates are helping Peter Pan find his shadow. His shadow has been captured by Captain Hook and his pirates. Peter Pan has called upon Jake and the Neverland Pirates to help him out. Captain Hook has Mr. Smee, Sharky and Bones helping them out and they can’t seem to do anything right. Jake, Izzy, Cubby and Skully are the Neverland Pirates and each has a special skill that helps Peter Pan. They work as a team to trick Captain Hook and get Peter’s shadow back.

What stands out in this full-length movie is the songs. The movie features Peter singing about his lost shadow(“I Can’t Fly”). Your kids will be singing this catchy tune along with Peter for weeks. Captain Hook and Peter Pan sing a duet together that got a lot of play in my house as well. Brilliant upbeat songs add to the fun story and great characters in this movie. The “Neverland Pirate Band” is a live action band that plays at the end of each episode and plays at the end of “Peter Pan Returns” as well. The band is a lot of fun and adds to the charming pirate premise of the movie and franchise.

If you are looking for an educational movie rather than entertaining movie, this may not be your first choice. Lessons of teamwork and thinking before you act are prevalent. As the team works together and finish a task, they gather gold doubloons. At the end of each episode they count up their doubloons and add them to their treasure chest. This is great for teaching kids counting skills. The educational aspect of the movie is not overwhelming however. This is mostly entertainment. Great entertainment. Your kids will have fun! I know mine did!
